Connect an AI

Let Claude, Cursor, VS Code or another AI app read and write your notes, with fewer tokens and a memory. It is built into Nighty Vault and runs on your PC.

What it does

  • Reads a small map first

    Every page of your project as one line with a short summary, so your AI knows what is there without opening it all.

  • Searches

    It finds the pages and lines that match, in one project or all of them, and the Library.

  • Reads just the section it needs

    One heading’s part of a page, or only its headings, instead of the whole page. Fewer tokens.

  • Writes and edits pages

    New pages with [[links]], small edits, notes added under a heading, pages renamed with their links.

  • Remembers lessons

    Something it should never forget becomes a page in Lessons. It reads them before it starts.

Set it up

Three steps, about a minute. The MCP server is part of Nighty Vault: no Node.js, nothing else to download.

  1. Nighty Vault Setup Installing Nighty Vault Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit

    Install Nighty Vault

    Get it free from the Nighty Vault page and install it. The AI part is built in.

  2. R S Connect an AI connect Ctrl K Connect an AI… Settings

    Open Connect an AI

    Click the sparkle button in the Moon bar. Or press Ctrl + K and pick Connect an AI…, or find it in Settings.

  3. Connect an AI Claude Desktop Connect Claude Code Add to Claude Code Other apps: the JSON Copy { "mcpServers": { "nighty-vault": … } }

    Connect your AI app

    Claude Desktop: Connect. Claude Code: Add to Claude Code. Other apps: copy the JSON. More below.

Nighty Vault shows the exact command and JSON for your PC, with Copy buttons. You never type a path.

Step 3, for your AI app

  • Claude Desktop

    One click.

    1. In Connect an AI, click Connect next to Claude Desktop.
    2. Quit Claude Desktop fully, also from its icon in the tray by the clock (right-click, Quit), and open it again.
    3. Ask Claude about your notes: Nighty Vault is in its tools.

    Nighty Vault adds only its own entry to Claude Desktop’s settings, and keeps a copy of the old file first. By hand: in Claude Desktop, Settings > Developer > Edit Config, and paste the JSON from Nighty Vault.

  • Claude Code

    One click, or one command.

    1. In Connect an AI, click Add to Claude Code.
    2. Or copy the command Nighty Vault shows, and run it in any terminal.
    3. Start a new Claude Code chat. Type /mcp to see nighty-vault.
    The command looks like this (the app shows yours)
    claude mcp add --scope user nighty-vault -- "C:\Users\you\AppData\Local\Nighty Vault\nighty-vault.exe" --mcp
  • Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and others

    Any app that runs MCP servers.

    1. In Connect an AI, click Copy next to the JSON.
    2. Paste it into the app’s MCP settings, then restart the app or start a new chat.
    Cursor
    ~/.cursor/mcp.json (Cursor Settings > MCP)
    Windsurf
    ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json
    VS Code
    Command Palette > “MCP: Open User Configuration”. There the list is called "servers", not "mcpServers".
    The JSON looks like this (the app shows yours)
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "nighty-vault": {
          "command": "C:\\Users\\you\\AppData\\Local\\Nighty Vault\\nighty-vault.exe",
          "args": ["--mcp"]
        }
      }
    }

What your AI can do: 11 tools

Read 4

These only look. They never change a page.

List projects list_projects
Your projects and the Library, with how many pages each has.
Map of a project vault_map
Every page as one line with a short summary, plus the project’s AI rules and lessons. Your AI starts here.
Search pages search
Finds words in your pages and shows the lines around them.
Read a page read_page
The whole page, one section of it, or just its headings, with the pages it links to and from.

Write 7

Every change is kept in the page’s history.

Write a page write_page
Makes a new page, or replaces one, with its folders.
Edit a page edit_page
Small find-and-replace changes, without rewriting the page.
Add to a page append_to_page
Adds text at the end of a page, or under one of its headings.
Rename or move a page rename_page
The links to it change with it.
Delete a page delete_page
Moves it to the project’s trash, so you can get it back.
Create a project create_project
Blank, or from the Roblox, Student or Writer starter.
Save a lesson add_lesson
Keeps something your AI should never forget as a page in Lessons. It reads them before it starts.

The Token Saver’s ladder

Your AI climbs one step at a time and stops as soon as it has enough, so it often never needs a whole page.

  1. MapEvery page as one line, with a one-line summary.
  2. SearchThe lines that match, across your pages.
  3. OutlineOnly the headings of one page.
  4. SectionOnly the part of a page that matters.
  5. Full pageOnly when it really needs it.

Coming soonA live meter that shows how many tokens your AI read and saved.

Try asking

  • “In my Nighty Vault project “My Roblox game”, how does the combo window work?”

    It reads the map, searches for “combo”, then opens just that section.

  • “Write today’s devlog about the shop fix, and link it to the Shop page.”

    It makes a new page in Devlog with a [[link]] to Shop.

  • “Remember for every project: check every RemoteEvent argument on the server.”

    It saves a lesson in the Library. From then on, every map shows it.

Safe by design

  • On your PC only

    Your AI app starts Nighty Vault’s own program on your computer. Nighty Vault sends nothing to the internet or to this website.

  • Only your projects

    It reads and writes only inside your Nighty Vault projects and the Library, never anywhere else on your PC.

  • Every change is kept

    Each page your AI changes keeps its older versions in the page history, so you can go back.

  • Delete means the trash

    A page your AI deletes moves to the project’s trash, never gone for good. It is told to ask you before it deletes or renames many pages.

What your AI reads goes to your AI app, like anything else you show it. Connect only AI apps you trust.

Troubleshooting

Claude doesn’t show Nighty Vault

Claude Desktop loads its tools only when it starts, and closing its window is not enough. Quit it fully, also from its icon in the tray by the clock (right-click, Quit), then open it again.

Still not there? Open Connect an AI in Nighty Vault and click Connect again.

“claude” is not recognized, or “command not found”

Add to Claude Code and the command need Claude Code on your PC. Install Claude Code, close and open Nighty Vault again, then click Add to Claude Code. Using another AI app? Copy the JSON instead.

I moved or reinstalled Nighty Vault

Your AI app remembers where Nighty Vault was. Open Connect an AI and click Connect (or Add to Claude Code) again. For other apps, copy the JSON again and paste it over the old one.

My AI doesn’t see the tools yet

AI apps load their tools when a chat starts: start a new chat, or restart the app.

How do I disconnect it?

In Connect an AI, click Disconnect for Claude Desktop, or Remove for Claude Code. In other apps, delete “nighty-vault” from their MCP settings. Your pages stay as they are.

How it works

Your AI app starts nighty-vault.exe --mcp and talks to it through MCP over stdio. No window opens and no network port is opened. It sees the same projects as the app, and pages it writes show up in the app by themselves.

Your AI app lists it as nighty-vault.
