What you get

  • Plain Markdown files

    Your notes are normal .md files in normal folders. Open them in any app and back them up any way you like.

  • Projects and a Library

    One project per thing: a game, school, a book. The Library holds what every project needs, and every project can see it.

  • Links and backlinks

    Type [[ to link a page. Each page shows the pages linked to it.

  • An easy editor

    Live preview with a toolbar and a / menu. You never need to know Markdown.

  • Find anything

    Press Ctrl+K and type a few words to jump to any page.

  • Constellation

    Your notes as glowing stars, in 2D or as a 3D galaxy you can spin. Health shows pages with no links and pages that may be out of date.

  • History and trash

    Every page keeps its older versions. Deleted pages go to a trash folder, never gone for good.

  • Packs

    Import pages from someone, or share your own. You see a preview first, and nothing in a pack runs.

  • Starter packs

    Roblox game dev (DataStore, RemoteEvent security, replication, Luau snippets and templates), Student and Writer. Or start blank.

  • Connect an AI

    Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other AI apps read and write your notes through an MCP server built into Nighty Vault, on your PC. It reads a small map first, so it uses fewer tokens, and it keeps lessons as pages.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit Mac and Linux come later.
  • WebView2 Microsoft’s web view. It comes with Windows 11, and most Windows 10 PCs have it too.
  • No account, no internet Only to download it. Everything else works offline.

Get started

  1. Download

    Get Nighty-Vault-setup.exe with the button at the top of this page. It is free.

  2. Install

    Open the file and follow the installer.

  3. Start writing

    The first time, a short setup helps you make your first project and pick a starter pack.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Nighty Vault is free to use, with no account, no sign-up and no ads.

Is it open source?

No. It is free to use, but closed source, under the NightyCode License.

Where are my notes?

On your PC, as plain Markdown (.md) files in normal folders: Documents\Nighty Vault\Library and Documents\Nighty Vault\Projects. You can also open any folder you already have as a project. Your notes never go to this website.

Can I open my Obsidian vault?

Yes. An Obsidian vault is a folder of Markdown files too: open it as a project and your pages and [[links]] are there. Nighty Vault leaves the .obsidian folder alone. Obsidian plugins don’t run in Nighty Vault.

Does it need internet?

No. Everything works offline. You only need internet to download it.

Can my AI use my notes?

Yes. Nighty Vault has an MCP server built in. In the app, click the sparkle button, Connect an AI: Claude Desktop connects in one click, and Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and other AI apps get the command or settings to copy.
